In such moments, existence is a miraculous and mysterious reality.

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child--our own two eyes. All is a miracle.

-Thich Nhat Hanh

40,425,000 as of the 2004 census.

There are more Hispanic/Latino people residing in the United States than there are any other minority race. That's not counting Puerto Rico, for the record.

From South America, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, we (or our family members) came to this country for myriad reasons. There have been significant contributions made by Hispanic Americans to this country's development in almost any area you can name. It would take me all day to fully detail these, but just a few things worth noting:

-Jaime Escalante, a teacher who so greatly improved math and science skills for inner city youths in Los Angeles that they were accused of cheating on the Calculus Advanced Placement Exam. See the movie Stand and Deliver to learn more about him.

-Luis Alverez won the Nobel prize in physics for his work with subatomic particles.

-Severo Ochoa won the Nobel prize in medicine for laboratory synthesis of DNA and RNA.

-Truman Capote. Not to mention a host of other Hispanic-Americans actors, musicians, authors, and other entertainers.

-Elwood Quesada, first head of the FAA.

-Cesar Chavez, the founder of the National Farm Workers' Association.

Hispanic-Americans have been an integral part of this nation since its formation. From 1775-77, Bernardo de Galvez provided rations and weapons to the Continental Army. Galveston, Texas is named for him.

BUT OH MY GOD THE SPICS RECORDED THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IN SPANISH, GOD FUCKING FORBID!!!

It's not their country because they're Hispanic? Is that the problem? Or is it because it's in Spanish, which isn't the 'official' language of this country but is spoken by 30,000,000 people?

BUT IT HAS A REGGAETON BEAT OH NOS!!!

Because, it's a bastardization to change the tune? Does ANYBODY else fucking realize that the tune for our national anthem is a British drinking song for fuck's sake?

You don't have to like illegal immigrants. You don't have to like hispanic-americans. However, ANY idiot that wants to walk around as though Hispanic-Americans are any less 'American' than anyone else needs their face punched. I volunteer.

My son just sang me a song to the tune of that olde Christmas song, Silent Night.

The lyrics are as follows:

"Silent fart,
Deadly fart,
All is calm,
But not for long."

At the end of this little ditty, he made a fart noise with his mouth.

I suppose this is what nine year olds do.
